DR. PURNENDU ROY M.B.B.S, M.S, F.I.C.S, F.A.I.S, FAMS, D.UROL (LONDON) Chairman & Managing Director – Genesis Group of Companies: Genesis Hospital | Genesis Institute of Management & Technology (GIMT) | Genesis Eduventure (GE) | Genesis Educational and Charitable Trust (GECT) | Orion Entertainment (Orion Production & Communications Pvt. Ltd.) Gallbladder is a small organ in the upper abdomen. The area in the middle of your body that holds many organs including the stomach and gallbladder. In past, doctors made a large cut (incision) in the belly to remove the gallbladder known as Open Surgery. Today, doctors can do this surgery with tiny instruments with just a few small cuts commonly known as Laparoscopic Surgery, because the main instrument is called a laparoscope. Symptoms to look for before Gallbladder Surgery : Sharp pain in the abdomen Nausea Vomiting Indigestion, Fever Yellow skin or Jaundice in which the skin and eyes look yellowish. You may get Jaundice, if gallstones block the bile duct. Doctor's usually order a test which is an Ultrasound which shows the inside of the stomach using sound waves. One can remain awake during the test and it does not hurt. If a patient needs more tests, one may need to have a CT scan or a HIDA scan is used to show how well one's gallbladder and bile duct are working. Advantages of Laparoscopic Gallbladder Surgery : Smaller incision – 4 small incisions, each less than one (1) inch long, instead of a 5 to 7 inch incision for open surgery. Less pain than after open surgery. Quicker recovery than open surgery – One can go home the next day after surgery. Within 4 - 5 days, one can go back to regular activities. One needs to see the surgeon within 2 to 3 weeks after surgery. When should you CALL YOUR DOCTOR after LAPAROSCOPIC CHOLECYSTECTOMY? Fever over 101 degrees F Severe pain or swelling in the belly Yellow skin or Jaundice Feeling sick to your stomach or throwing up (nausea or vomiting) – Call your doctor, if you cannot eat or drink Blood or pus coming from any of the small cuts in the surgery area or redness that spreads or gets worse Pain that your medicines do not help Breathing problems or a cough that does not get better.
