Residents of Gobabis gathered to commemorate International Women's Day, a day set aside to recognise the achievements and contributions of women in society. The event highlighted the important role women continue to play in leadership, development and community building across Namibia. The theme of this year's event is "Rights. Justice. Action for All Women and Girls". Speakers at the event also reflected on the country's progress in promoting gender equality and empowering women at all levels of society. Governor of Omaheke Region, Pijoo Nganate, says, "As we gather to celebrate our women, our mothers and our girl child. It is indeed a particularly meaningful moment in our nation's history, as Namibia today stands under the leadership of a woman at the highest level of governance. With a female president, vice president and speaker of the National Assembly, our country sends out a very powerful message that women's leadership is essential to national progress." Regional Police Commander for Omaheke Region, Commissioner Heinrich Tjiveze, adds, "International Women's Day provides an opportunity to acknowledge and celebrate vital contributions women make across every part of society, including within law enforcement. From all areas of our communities to frontline officers and organisational leaders, women are essential in helping to maintain the safety and security of the communities we serve." The UN resident coordinator for Namibia is Hopolang Phororo. "Namibia has made significant strides toward gender equality - progress that is visible, measurable, and recognised globally. According to the World Economic Forum's Global Gender Gap Report 2025, Namibia has closed 81.1% of its gender gap, ranking 8th globally and 1st in Africa. Action - this year's final pillar - requires urgency and consistency. It means ensuring that women and girls are not left behind as Namibia advances in digital transformation, green industrialisation, and climate resilience." Minister of Gender Equality and Child Welfare Emma Kantema says the government remains committed to promoting gender equality and ensuring that both women and men have equal opportunities to contribute to national development. "Namibian women and girls have made remarkable progress in the arenas of education and health, which are critical pillars of empowerment. Remarkably, we give thanks for the sustained and continued efforts towards universal primary and secondary education; girls' performance is remarkable in many educational indicators, including in technical, vocational education and training as well as in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. However, we are concerned about the underperformance and underparticipation of the boy child in education. Hence, measures have been put in place to address the plights of the boys."
