How sad that the only known videos of the great William Henry "Chick" Webb consist of the absurdly offensive and disrespectful 1929 blackface comedy "After Seben" and few seconds of silent March of Time newsreel footage of Webb and his orchestra performing at the Savoy Ballroom. I present this compilation to honor one of the greatest drummers in history, knowing full well I may be chastised for reproducing the Jim Crow "After Seven" film short. While "After Seben" is certainly disrespectful today, a 20 year old Webb probably saw it as an opportunity to further his career. The video begins with Chick Webb in the 1929 film short “After Seben” staring James Barton (courtesy of 2reeler). Barton, a white Vaudeville comic, performs in “black face” as the emcee and solo dancer at a Harlem nightspot. Behind him, Chick Webb and his Harlem Stompers provide the music in full view. Webb’s abbreviated drum set (probably Leedy Drums) consists of a snare drum, a Chinese tom, Chinese cymbal, and what appears to be a 28 inch bass drum decorated with a country scene painted on the front head. As the band begins to play “Sweet Sue,” Chick joins in on snare drum. Unfortunately the film’s sound quality does not offer much to reveal Webb’s playing save a few snare accents. What follows is silent newsreel footage of Chick Webb and his Orchestra performing at the Savoy Ballroom (courtesy of the March of Time - Original Dixieland Jazz Band video by adamgswanson and the vimeo video “Extremely rare footage of Chick Webb and Gene Krupa” by Tom Castagna). Chick is seen with his Frank Wolf drum set consisting of a 28 inch bass drum, a 12 by 14 inch tom on his right, a 6 ½ by 14 inch snare drum (all probably covered in Green Sparkle Pearl), a 15 inch Chinese cymbal on his right, a 13 inch Zildjian crash above that, a 12 Zildjian crash on his left, 12 inch Zildjian hi hats, all mounted on a Premier “Swingster” rolling console with gooseneck cymbal arms. I added the audio track of the Chick Webb Orchestra’s “Harlem Congo” as it seemed to fit the tempo of the dancers. The final photo used to ride out the audio track is Webb seated at his custom Gretcsh Gladstone set. Once again a 28 inch bass drum, a 14 by 16 inch floor tom on his right, a 9 by 13 inch tom on his left, and a 6 ½ by 14 inch snare all covered in White Oriental Pearl with Green Sparkle Baby Chicks strolling around the circumference. The cymbal set up remained the same, a 15 inch Chinese cymbal on his right, a 13 inch Zildjian crash above that, a 12 Zildjian crash on his left, 12 inch Zildjian hi hats, all mounted on a Premier “Swingster” rolling console with gooseneck cymbal arms.
