Mel Duncan, founder of Nonviolent Peaceforce (NP), developed the strategy of deploying unarmed peacekeepers to protect civilians in conflict zones. NP has achieved a track record demonstrating the effectiveness of unarmed civilian protection in some of the world most dangerous conflicts such as Myanmar, South Sudan, Bangladesh, the Philippines and Iraq. This pioneering work in unarmed civilian protection so impressed the American Friends Service Committee they nominated Nonviolent Peaceforce for the 2016 Nobel Peace Prize. Mel’s work has extended to advocacy at the United Nations resulting in the UN issuing sixteen policies, recommendations, and resolutions recognizing guns are often not as effective as words and relationships, particularly to increase safety for women and girls. In this video, Mel describes his work convening a gathering of the 42 organizations currently doing some form of unarmed civilian protection in 24 areas around the world. The goal of these gatherings is documenting best practices and creating a global movement to bring unarmed peacekeeping to parity with armed peacekeeping, both politically and economically.
