🏔️ *Seekarlspitze Winter Ascent via Spieljoch | Rofan Mountains, Austria* In this video, we take you on a winter adventure to Seekarlspitze in the Rofan Mountains of Tyrol, Austria — but not via the usual winter route through Gruberscharte. Instead, we chose the more demanding black alpine path via Spieljoch, a route that requires proper winter equipment, solid experience, and careful judgment. We started our hike from the Rofan Seilbahn (Rofan Cable Car), gaining elevation quickly before beginning our snowshoe ascent into the alpine terrain. With avalanche conditions at **Level 2 (LS2 – Moderate)**, terrain awareness and route selection were essential throughout the climb. Even moderate avalanche danger can become serious on steep slopes and exposed traverses. After about two hours of hiking, we reached the Erfurter Hütte — a well-known mountain hut and a central point in the Rofan area. This region above Lake Achensee is also famous for skiing and winter sports, attracting outdoor enthusiasts throughout the season. Continuing toward Spieljoch, the route became increasingly exposed. At one critical traverse, the fixed iron safety rope was completely buried under snow. We carefully carved through the snow to uncover it before crossing — a powerful reminder of how winter transforms alpine routes. At the summit of Seekarlspitze stands a remarkable granite summit cross. Installed in 2020 and airlifted into place by helicopter, the 6.7-ton cross was erected in tribute to 60 years of the Maurach Mountain Rescue Service — a striking symbol of resilience in these mountains.
