Seeing how some people in these vintage tech circles still believe that Windows 98 was "the best" of the Windows 9x family, I wanted to dispel such an illusion. I decided to pull an excerpt of this recording I made of a relative's HP Pavilion 4530 back in 2011, when I got the machine from her. It came with a 350MHz AMD K6-2 and a measly 32MB of RAM, 4 of which was taken by the onboard SiS video chipset. Since then, it had not once been upgraded from its original specifications from 1999, at least not until I personally pushed it up to 384MB in 2012. I'm not sure what the original idea behind this recording was, maybe I was meaning to show a complete upload of some Windows 98 tutorials. Yet there were other parts of this recording which involved loading a theme, running some multimedia programs, and creating some edgelord PowerPoint that I cringe from looking at now. The original iMovie HD project was never edited, and only now did I get around to chopping up the source DV files with some more compelling context in mind: essentially displaying how computers from this era would've performed for years onward. Needless to say, this computer ran miserably. For that matter, it's kind of heroic how she weathered the storm this much, up until she got a ThinkPad in 2005 or so. I guess when one's only exposure to computers has been on the low end of the spectrum, it's only reasonable to believe that's just how computers are. In contrast, my uncle built a much different Windows 98 computer for us in 2000, one which he knew very well how to maintain, and was able to withstand the bloat of Windows XP for years to come. While my own personal experience with Windows 98 was generally great on the living room computer in question, the same cannot be said of some other Windows 98 computers I used back then, even if I did get a kick out of them. There was this Packard Bell Legend 994CDT my dad used, which arrived in 1998 with only 48MB of RAM (almost certainly a late upgrade) and a 133MHz Pentium. It was outrageously slow to respond to commands. Then comes to mind some other Compaq Presario desktop which was purchased the same year, of which I don't remember the specifications because I have next to no traces of its existence now, but it was similarly sluggish. Windows 98's IE-based shell is a sludge party, and will absolutely bog down many systems from this age if you don't pump enough RAM into them. Good luck with that when a simple 32MB expansion would've cost hundreds of dollars. Actually, we're kind of coming full circle with that lately due to artificial intelligence companies chasing grand delusions of vaporware at the cost of us all, but I don't see how that can reasonably survive long term. If we've just seen 128GB kits for $300, we will see them again for less. It really is only a matter of time before the facade falls apart. Either way, Windows 98 is overrated as hell. For low spec systems, Windows 95 is a much, much better option. For the systems which ride high with Windows 98, well... why not just put Windows ME on them, and get loads of quality of life enhancements as standard. I no longer own this computer shown here, as I hate major brand OEM systems. They're too restrictive, both in the physical case and the motherboard BIOS. Meanwhile, the good Windows 98 computer I actually used daily is still with me after 25 years, and holding up very well... except for that floppy controller, have to figure out what's causing it to fail to read anything. I tend to bypass it using network file sharing and PXE, anyway. That computer will be the star of a large video to come in the near future.
