Until the space race of the 1960s, no other engineering feat in history attracted as much attention as the building of the Thames Tunnel. Tunnels under the river are commonplace today, with 23 in London alone - but Crossrail, the Channel Tunnel, and much of the London Underground system were all built using updated versions of Brunel’s pioneering idea. While the tunnel was under construction, visitors could pay a shilling to see the miners at work.
