Decades ago, in the southern part of Germany, archeologists made an unusual discovery ... one that in recent times and under modern analysis, has only grown stranger. Herxheim is an ancient Linear Pottery Culture settlement, that flourished through the last part of the 5th millennium BCE, and upon excavation has revealed some fascinating insights into this mysterious, lost culture – and also, bodies. Hundreds of bones and bone fragments (along with other things) would be recovered in a ditch at the site, and some experts believe there could be as many as 1350 people interred around the settlement of Herxheim. But this is not a standard LBK burial practice, and the bones were not only scattered and jumbled, but showed signs of such incredible trauma, that soon a disturbing new theory would form, one that would make shockwaves around the world: that Herxheim is the site of an ancient outburst of exocannibalism. Exocannibalism is cannibalism that is acceptable within one’s own group, as long as it is against outsiders/others in some way; and like anything to do with cannibalism, this claim being made about Herxheim was immediately an extremely contentious topic. There are some who dislike this theory for our site, and some who dislike the idea of exocannibalism as a concept at all. But why? And was does the evidence say? To truly understand what we’re seeing, we need to go outside Germany, outside Europe, and look at all of history – and look at the history of exocannibalism as a whole. In this first part of our journey, we're going to look at incidents of exocannibalism from as far back as 1.45 million years ago, all the way up to 1500CE. Because while opinions differ, as we explore ancient Europe, Asia, Africa, and literally everywhere else, we’ll start to see that sometimes, not just at Herxheim, our enemies have been animals. And unfortunately, throughout our past, that can occasionally mean only one thing...
