From MeToo to UsTwo: Getting Real About Men as Allies | Sarah Bodner | TEDxSanAntonioWomen

Diversity is in the news and companies are focusing on increasing female leadership. Talk to any female leader and each will share a shockingly similar list of challenges that they face professionally. Women in power often counter mental models, which creates discomfort and negatively impacts how women leaders are perceived. Women leaders are frustrated. Wisely, many companies are tasking mid and senior leadership (frequently male) with developing and growing the number of female leaders within their organization. However, the current zeitgeist characterizes men as the primary root of female challenges in corporations. Additionally, well-intentioned sexual harassment training and the #MeToo movement have scared male leaders so that they avoid time alone with women or discussing gender issues for fear of unintentionally offending or being misinterpreted. Male leaders are defensive. The solution is relatively simple … and yet complex. Both men and women leaders need to have their experiences and viewpoints validated. Only then can they see beyond their own perspective and be enlightened as to the experience of the opposite gender. Then one woman at a time, one man at a time, together, moving past their frustration and defensiveness can positively impact the advancement of women. Dr. Bodner understands the plight of the executive. Sarah is a coach, trusted advisor and confidante to executives leading in changing environments. Her clients are Fortune 500 leaders in the fashion, chemical, medical, energy, and airline industries. She has been a senior leader within a highly regulated, risk averse, geographically dispersed organization that was forced to change in response to immense technological, political, and financial pressures. Her "super power" is the ability to quickly sort through highly complex challenges, with often conflicting and disparate stakeholder views, then identify a simplified path forward.
