One key aspect in maintaining crew health and performance during spaceflight missions is the provision of a habitable environment with acceptably low concentrations of microbiological and toxicological contaminants. To achieve this goal, the Microbiology, Water and Food Analytical (WAFAL), and Toxicology Laboratories develop appropriate operational and vehicle design requirements to mitigate the risk to crew health. These requirements include the analysis of spaceflight vehicles, cargo, food, potable water, and crew, including stringent monitoring both before, during, and after flight. www.nasa.gov/hhp/human-systems-academy
