Live on February 9th, 2025 at Clemente Pianos Violin: Guillem Baviera Fusté Piano: Daniel Olmos Frechina ——— Edvard Grieg’s Violin Sonata No. 3 in C minor, Op. 45 stands as the most ambitious and symphonically conceived of his three violin sonatas. Composed in 1886–87, the work reflects a mature Grieg, combining Norwegian nationalist colour with a broader Romantic intensity and structural command. The first movement, marked Allegro molto ed appassionato, immediately establishes a dramatic and urgent character. The opening theme, presented with bold energy, sets a turbulent emotional landscape driven by rhythmic insistence and harmonic tension. Rather than treating the violin as a mere melodic voice accompanied by piano, Grieg creates a true partnership between the two instruments. The piano writing is rich, full-bodied, and orchestral in scope, while the violin alternates between lyrical expansiveness and fiery declamation. Contrasting material introduces moments of warmth and folk-like lyricism, revealing Grieg’s unmistakable melodic voice. These passages provide emotional relief but never fully dissolve the underlying tension. The movement unfolds through dynamic contrasts and thematic transformation, maintaining a strong forward momentum until its decisive and forceful conclusion. In this sonata, Grieg moves beyond salon-style intimacy and embraces a larger, more dramatic scale. The first movement demands not only technical assurance from both performers, but also a strong sense of ensemble, balance, and shared narrative direction. It is a work of passion, depth, and national character, firmly rooted in the Romantic tradition while bearing Grieg’s distinctive Nordic identity. ——— #Grieg #ViolinSonataNo3 #EdvardGrieg #ViolinAndPiano #ChamberMusic #RomanticMusic #ViolinRecital #PianoCollaborative #GuillemBavieraFuste #DanielOlmosFrechina #ClementePianos #LiveRecital #ClassicalMusic
