🇯🇵 It’s interesting how strength seems to shift depending on where we place our time and energy. Since retiring, I’ve noticed that I feel more physically capable—thanks, I think, to the slow, steady rhythm of daily life now: walking the dogs, tending the garden, working with my hands. I’m moving more, sitting less, and finding that my body responds well to this softer form of labor. At the same time, I seem to have lost a different kind of endurance—the mental strength that once felt second nature. Back then, I could juggle plans, meetings, emails, and high-stakes decisions without blinking. Now, even an hour of that kind of sustained mental focus feels like work. But I don’t see this shift as loss. It’s just… adaptation. We grow strong in the places we return to often—and softer in the places we leave behind. That’s not failure. That’s life finding its shape in a new season. ➡️ Learn more about our retirement journey in Retiring in Japan: The Personal Journey of Kurt and Yumiko Bell A thoughtful look at leaving behind one life to begin another in a place that once felt like home.
