The Punch Brothers' Chris Thile and Chris Eldridge play the Glenn Gould interpretation of J.S. Bach's Partita No. 1 (BWV 825), Part II: Allemande, at the Green Music Center in Rohnert Park, California during a live recording of the NPR show "Live From Here With Chris Thile" on July 20, 2019. Johann Sebastian Bach wrote Partita No. 1 for harpsichord in 1726. Canadian classical pianist Glenn Gould first recorded his interpretation of these Partitas for piano in 1957 for CBS Records. Here, Chris Eldridge plays Gould's left-hand part on the guitar and Chris Thile plays the right-hand part on the mandolin. Thile and Eldridge are bandmates in the band The Punch Brothers. This performance was part of the show's weekly Musician Birthdays tribute segment; Glenn Gould was born on September 25, 1932. This episode of Live From Here will air on NPR stations on September 21, 2019. ===================================== Chris Thile official bio: By the time Live From Here host Chris Thile turned 15, he had already been playing mandolin for a decade. He'd also started Nickel Creek with Sara and Sean Watkins, and released his first solo recording, 1994's Leading Off. This Grammy winner and MacArthur Fellow teams up with numerous musicians in myriad styles and leads acoustic quintet Punch Brothers. His albums include Thanks For Listening (Nonesuch), ten studio recordings originally written as A Prairie Home Companion Songs of the Week. ===================================== Chris Eldridge official bio: Maybe it's in the gene pool: Chris "Critter" Eldridge's father was a founding member of the Seldom Scene, a group that guitarist Chris would join after earning a degree in music performance from Oberlin. He went on to start a bluegrass band, The Infamous Stringdusters, and later to critical acclaim with Punch Brothers. Mount Royal is his second duo album with guitarist Julian Lage. It was nominated for a Grammy for Best Contemporary Instrumental Album. ======================================= Live From Here 9/21/19 Episode - Official Blurb: Sonoma State University proudly presents a live recorded broadcast of Live from Here with Chris Thile, in partnership with KQED.
