Professor Cole tells us about this violent conflict during what’s known as the Red Summer, in which 38 people were killed and 537 wounded. It is largely forgotten, but its legacy continues, for it contributed mightily to the city’s increasingly segregated neighborhoods. The Chicago Race Riot of 1919 Commemoration Project (CRR19), a public art project, plans to mark the locations of all those killed, launching on the centennial, July 27th, 2019, to educate about the past and ignite conversations about racial justice and harmony for our future. He explains what happened, why it mattered, and how the project plans to commemorate it. Professor Cole spoke to us on April 14, 2019. For more on CRR19 - https://web.iit.edu/community-affairs...
