He is a massive, draugr-like warrior who fights with a polearm and heavy frost-based attacks. ​Strategy: How to Beat Hjalmgunnar ​Since the Forgotten Saga is a roguelite, your build will change every run, but the mechanics of the fight remain the same. ​1. Exploiting Weaknesses ​Element: Hjalmgunnar is weak to Fire. If you can find a weapon with fire damage or the "Incendiary Powder Trap" ability before reaching him, the fight becomes significantly easier. ​Weak Points: He has three weak points (glowing spots) on his body—usually his knees and shoulders. Hitting these with your bow will deplete his stamina and open him up for a high-damage Stun Attack. ​2. Phase One: The Polearm ​In the first half of the fight, he uses long-reaching sweeps and overhead slams. ​The "Brush with Death" Skill: This is the most important skill in the DLC. If you dodge just before his swing lands, time slows down, allowing you to get 4–5 hits in for free. ​Stay Behind Him: His forward-facing attacks have a huge range. Stick to his back or sides. ​3. Phase Two: The Scythe & Frost ​Once he hits 50% health, he draws a massive scythe and adds frost AOE (Area of Effect) attacks. ​Frost Circles: He will slam the ground, creating expanding rings of ice.
