Welcome to Part 1 of a brand new wildlife photography series, where I travel to Bourne, England with my dad—Pops—to capture some of Britain’s most iconic animals through the lens. In this episode, we visit Wildlife Photography Hides UK, owned and run by the talented Tom Robinson, to photograph the jewel of the riverbank: the Kingfisher. Known for its electric blue feathers and lightning-fast dives, the kingfisher is a dream subject for photographers—but it’s no easy catch. We spend the day in a purpose-built hide with mirrorless cameras locked in, hoping to freeze this stunning bird in mid-flight or perched with a fresh catch. You’ll see everything: our arrival at the site, the setup in the hide, the technical challenges of fast-action bird photography, and the raw excitement of watching a kingfisher dart like a bullet across the water. It’s also about sharing the experience—me and Pops in a hide for hours, trading stories, tips, and occasional snacks while we wait for the magic to happen.
