The Short Stirling was the Royal Air Force’s first four-engine heavy bomber, introduced in 1940. Designed by Short Brothers, it was intended to meet the Air Ministry's 1936 B.12/36 specification, prioritizing payload and defensive armament. Though innovative for its time, its short wingspan (99 feet) limited its operational ceiling to around 16,500 feet, making it vulnerable to enemy defenses. Initially a frontline strategic bomber, the Stirling served with No. 7 Squadron first, later equipping numerous RAF squadrons in Bomber Command. By 1943–1944, it was phased out of main bombing roles in favor of the Lancaster and Halifax but found a second life in airborne operations, towing gliders and dropping paratroopers for D-Day and Market Garden, as well as in special duties and electronic warfare. The transport variant, the Stirling Mk V, remained in use until early 1946, marking the aircraft’s final retirement from service. Despite its shortcomings, it laid the groundwork for later British heavy bombers.
