In this video, we showcase how firefighters are trained to make knots like the Water Bend, Prusik Hitch, and how to create a Rope Anchor System using Webbing, maximizing the power of friction to give it a rating of 2000 lbs or more. This is part of a video series on Technical Rope Rescue. At the Virginia Beach Fire Academy, TRFA 156 has been divided into two: those who are to receive training on Advanced Emergency Medical Technician's Course (AEMT) at the Tidewater Community College and those that are to receive the Technical Rescue Course. In the first part of this video, you will find us joking around as we practice different hitches and knots just to make it light. The Fire Training instructors were kind enough to teach us everything we needed to know and correct us in case we were wrong. In the second part of this video, Captain Probst teaches the rope anchor system made up of webbing and a Prusik hitch which held extremely well. The descent control system he describes was made up of Webbing in a butterfly hitch which created a friction force capable of holding out 2000 pounds. Although not seen on the video, the rest of the recruits tried to pull on the rope at the same time and the hitch amazingly did not buckle or get torn off. Although technical rescue is optional for a firefighter's set of skills, the Virginia Beach Fire Department has made sure that "Introduction to Technical Rescue" is part and parcel of a Firefighter I and II. The skills shown in this video can not only save the lives of the victims that they were called to rescue but they can also save the firefighter's life when the situation gets super tough. If you are interested in technical rescue training, this video is perfect for you. Learn how to make different hitches and knots, create a rope anchor system using webbing and a Prusik hitch, and maximize the power of friction to make sure it can hold out 2000 pounds or more.
