Terrestrial insects will be appearing on area streams soon. Jason Freund will provide a stream ecology primer focused on helping to fish terrestrials more successfully. Concepts will include the river continuum concept, reciprocal prey subsidies. and how insect populations may be changing. Jason will then talk about the different types of insects, their habitat preferences and seasonality, and share some of his favorite patterns to imitate them. He will also talk about how to choose where to fish and what terrestrials to expect in different riparian habitat types. Jason Freund lives in La Crosse, Wisconsin where he is a teaching professor at the University of Wisconsin La Crosse in the Biology department. He earned his Bachelor's at the University of Wisconsin Platteville and his Masters and Ph. D. at West Virginia University. He is a stream ecologist who studies fish communities, how fish interact with their environment, and the effects of fisheries management on trout. He is currently conducting a project to explore the distribution of sculpin in the Kickapoo River watershed as well as working with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources on the Coon Creek comprehensive watershed study. He is also president of the Coulee Region Chapter of Trout Unlimited (https://www.couleeregiontu.org/) and writes a bi-weekly blog, "The Scientific Fly Angler" (https://www.thescientificflyangler.com/). In his free time, he likes to fish and camp. The Chapter meeting will start at 7 pm, with 10 minutes of "virtual lobby time" to give online participants time to log on. In-person participants are invited to join us for social time and food/drink (on your own dime) from 5 pm onward.
