Are we appointed to eternal life? Or, as the KJV puts it, "ordained to eternal life?" The "U" in the Calvinistic acrostic TULIP stands for "unconditional election." One of the primary passages used in support of this teaching is Acts 13:48. Now when the Gentiles heard this, they were glad and glorified the word of the Lord. And as many as had been appointed to eternal life believed. (Acts 13:48) At first glance, it seems that God elects some to be saved. Of course, that would mean He elects others not to be saved. Well, maybe. I think we have two options for interpreting this verse. 1. God did, in fact, do a special work in some that influenced them to believe. This furthered God's desire that the gospel also go to the Gentiles. 2. There were some in attendance who would believe, so they did believe on that day.
