Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey started it's recording on November 5, 1970 for Paul's 2nd solo album Ram. Like many songs by Paul the song was stitched together from unfinished song segments. The orchestra was arranged by George Marin. The song was recorded state side both in A & R Recording in New York and a studio in Los Angeles. The thunderstorm sound effect was added by Eirik Wangberg who also stitched together the song. According to Paul, "I had an uncle – Albert Kendall – who was a lot of fun, and when I came to write 'Uncle Albert'/'Admiral Halsey' it was loosely about addressing that older generation, half thinking, 'What would they think of the way my generation does things?' That's why I wrote the line 'We're so sorry, Uncle Albert." The song was released to commercial success peaking at 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. However it received mixed reviews critically , but in retrospect many reviewers do see the song as Ram's strongest song.
