I'm Mike Sullivan, a former IRS agent and teaching instructor, and I've worked thousands of IRS cases over my 52-year career. Yes, thousands — you can probably tell from the gray hair! In this video, I want to share an important tip that most taxpayers don't know — when and why to contact the Taxpayer Advocate Service (TAS). Many people assume the Taxpayer Advocate will help them just because they owe money to the IRS. But that’s not how it works. Let me be clear: The Taxpayer Advocate Service is not helpful if your only issue is owing money. That type of case belongs with the IRS Collection Division. If you're upset with how collections is treating you, TAS might contact them, but they’ll basically just ask, “What’s going on with this case?” and pass on the same info. That won’t change much. However, there are times when you absolutely SHOULD call the Taxpayer Advocate. If your IRS problem is complex and the tax assessment is actually wrong, TAS can step in and help straighten it out. This includes cases involving: Identity theft Incorrect assessments Systemic errors by the IRS Cases stuck in endless back-and-forth with the IRS service center The regular IRS service center is not equipped to deal with these complicated cases. Every time you call, you get a different person — and that lack of consistency can be extremely frustrating. TAS, on the other hand, assigns a single advocate to your case who can really dig into the issues. Here's a tip: You can FAX your request directly to the Taxpayer Advocate Office in your state. Yes, faxing might sound old school, but it’s still a reliable way to submit your paperwork. If you're dealing with a messy IRS situation and feel like you're stuck in a bureaucratic loop, this video will give you the guidance you need to determine your next step. 💡 Remember: The Taxpayer Advocate is not your go-to for every IRS issue — but when your assessment is incorrect or the IRS system is failing you, they can be your best ally.
