Hi Folks, In this video I am going to share some unwritten business practices foreigners need to be aware of before starting a business in Indonesia. The list isn't exhaustive and I won't go into nitty gritty details or naming any institution. Aim of this video is to prep you what to expect at street level. Yes, unwritten business practices mentioned here are unsavoury but it's better to see reality as it is so we can best prepare our responses. I am still waiting for the day where rules of law are enforced indiscriminately and people act with utmost integrity. In perfect world this video won't be necessary. Indonesian phrases mentioned in this video: Uang Rokok: literally means cigarette money. It's coded word to illicit bribery or facilitation money Uang Keamanan: money paid to provide for security. it's coded word in preman's world to extort business owners. Uang Pelicin: facilitation money to smooth things out e.g. procuring necessary licenses or securing tender. UUD (Ujung-Ujungnya Duit): at the end of the day it's all about money. Humorous derivation from UUD abbreviation (Undang-Undang Dasar) - Indonesian 1945 Constitution. Pungutan Liar (Pungli): illegal charge extorted by shady officials or 'Preman' (see below). Usually dressed up as 'Uang Keamanan'. Preman: street thugs or gangster. Sometimes act as hired hands to intimidate rivals, collect debtors or 'protest for a cause'. Kena tipu: being deceived, scammed, back stabbed. Kalau bisa dibikin susah kenapa harus gampang: why make it easy if you can make it hard. Sarcasm, usually uttered out of frustration with bureaucracy. Tolong dibantu ya Pak: please help us smooth things out Sir. Nanti ada uang rokok: I'll compensate for your trouble. Wish you all the best running business in Indonesia. Please like and subscribe if you learn something new. You can also buy me a coffee if my content helps you in any way, I’ll appreciate it very much as it helps feeding my young family. https://buymeacoffee.com/hendra1 Many thanks, Hendra #doingbusinessinIndonesia #Indonesianbusinesscustoms #indonesiabusinessrules #indonesiabusinessetiquette #unwrittenrulesofdoingbusinessinindonesia #visitindonesia #visitbali #indonesia #indonesianculture #visitbali #bali #indonesiantourism
