Here I explain why ERC projects are ideal for collaboration between institutions and disciplines and therefore provide a unique environment for the development of associated doctoral post-doctoral fellows. MAGIC 'Monsoons in Asia caused Greenhouse to Icehouse Change? is a scientific project funded by the European Research Council. It focuses on exploring the Asian climate history recorded in the geologic archives over 35 millions of years old. At this time the Earth switched from being very hot under greenhouse conditions without ice sheets, to being much cooler under icehouse conditions up until today. Understanding the cause of this yet unexplained major switch is relevant to constrain boundary conditions of the ongoing reversed switch from Icehouse to Greenhouse. It is also important to Earth climate behaviour under greenhouse conditions beyond the thresholds of melting the polar ice caps. The project involves several institutions including the CNRS, Potsdam and Amsterdam universities. The goals and members of the project are presented in this and a series of other videos and on our website: http://www.paleoenvironment.eu
