How To Stain Poplar

In this woodworking video I show you how to stain poplar. Poplar can look awesome if you follow a few steps, first by prepping the surface. I sand with 80 grit, 120 grit and stop at 150 grit with my orbital sander. I take the end grain up to 220 grit since it absorbs more finish than the face grain. The 220 grit will burnish the surface and help even the color. Next I raise the grain by spraying water on the surface. After the water dries I sand with 150 grit on the face grain and 220 grit on the end grain. To prevent blotching I apply a pre-stain conditioner using a stain pad. I wipe away the excess and let it dry for 30 - 60 minutes. I next apply an amber dye stain and let it dry for 2-4 hours Next I apply an Rosewood stain and wipe away the excess. I let it dry for 24 hours and then spray a few coats of shellac.
