Various of Sifa looking over a field with her daughter STORYLINE: Zawadi Sifa has been fleeing conflict since 2012, most recently finding herself in Goma as Rwanda-backed M23 rebels took over the city. At the St. Francis Xavier parish, which has taken in eastern Congo’s displaced as rebels encircled Goma, she sat with her youngest child in her lap. She said he’s been sick for two days, and she doesn’t know where to take him. "I came from Kisharo seeking refuge in Saké. When we arrived in Saké, the war worsened, forcing us to move to Rusayo. The M23 rebel takeover of Goma last week was just the latest development in the ongoing conflict in eastern Congo, which has been raging for decades. Sifa said that all of her seven children were born during the war, and she often gave birth while on the run. The M23 rebels are backed by some 4,000 troops from neighboring Rwanda, according to U.N. experts. They are the most potent of the more than 100 armed groups active in Congo’s east, which holds vast deposits critical to much of the world’s technology. Experts and analysts have expressed concern that Rwanda aims to take control of parts of Congo to ensure access to minerals.
