A furry ferret names Felicia fixed Fermilab for physicists! In the 1970s scientists built a particle accelerator with a 6 kilometer circular tube lined with magnets. This particle accelerator called Fermilab was the largest of its kind at the time, and it allowed researchers to learn more about subatomic particles like quarks! But during assembly they found that the magnets within the tube were covered in residue, tiny metal shavings, causing electrical shorts. Something about ferrets: they loveeeee crawling through tubes. Scientists simply equipped Felicia with a collar that could help them thread a string through the tubing. Then, they attached a cloth to the string, successfully cleaning out the tubing before installing it in the partical accelerator. Voilà! Ferrets love physics.
