Use of relays in modern vehicles and how using the type of relay without diode (or even resistor) protection can /could damage a vehicles computer. Diodes (and resistors) provide voltage spike protection. The demonstration will show a voltage spike of 150+volts on a 12volt relay circuit. The voltage spike will only cause issues if the relay is connected into the vehicles computer i.e. the computer sinks or sources power to activate the relay. I should add comment in this, that the Bosch relay I showed was a 'resistor' protected relay, which does the same thing as a diode and before someone tells me yes they can be wired either polarity on pins 85 & 86; however, it is good practice to always wire pin 86 to +volts. The diode relays must be wired correctly. If you have a modern ECU vehicle and one of the OEM relays breaks then make sure you use the correct type of replacement as the olden days of just replacing one with one that fits may cause more damage than your repair.
