About the Video: Welcome to this week's video! Today we talk about preparing for graduate seminars, and remember, this is especially geared toward students who have just started their graduate career! We talk about preparation in two senses, the first, how should I behave during a graduate seminar? This covers things like (1) what to do if I talk too much, and how to identify this, (2) what to do if I interrupt someone, and (3) what to do if I don't talk enough? Second, we talk about how to bring useful commentary and questions about the readings. This covers, for the purposes of class discussion: (1) how do I prepare each reading individually?, and (2) how do I prepare the readings as a group? When I have time, I will also be uploading a 'bonus time' video, about some more S P E C I F I C things to look for in each reading. If subtitles are not available, it means you have come to the video early (thank you!). YouTube will generate them, and they generally do a great job with my voice. About the Series: "How do I grad school?" will cover basic strategies for graduate school success, ranging from effective notetaking skills when reading or in class, to social issues like balancing activism with academia. My dissertation focuses on the Unrepresented Nations and Peoples Organization (UNPO) and their effort to gain recognition their constituent members' right to self-determination. I also actively study civil conflict, especially coups d'etat, and am generally interested in any situation where small groups of people change global political systems. austinschutz.net
