For the first time since Miss Universe began in 1952, Palestine will have a representative at the competition. Nadeen Ayoub, a model and advocate, has been selected as the first-ever Miss Palestine to compete, and previously made history by representing Palestine at Miss Earth 2022. In an interview with MEE, Ayoub admitted that although she is proud of herself, she feels the weight of “representing my nation and representing my people, and being a voice for the innocent people in Palestine, and women and children that want to show the world that they are more than just their suffering.” Beyond pageantry, she has been active in humanitarian and community work, collaborating with initiatives that support children’s health, education, and psychosocial wellbeing. Through her own platform, Saidat Falasteen (Women of Palestine), she amplifies the voices and stories of Palestinian women. The Miss Universe Organisation claims to be a neutral platform, yet the competition has faced political controversy before. In 2021, when the pageant was hosted in Eilat, Israel, critics condemned the choice of venue amid the ongoing occupation and accused organisers of cultural appropriation after contestants were filmed wearing traditional Palestinian thobes with tatreez embroidery and preparing Palestinian dishes, which were shared online as part of Israeli culture. That year, South Africa withdrew official support for its contestant in protest, citing parallels to apartheid. This year’s Miss Universe will be held in Thailand on 21 November 2025. #NadeenAyoub #MissPalestine #MissUniverse Catch previous episodes of MEE LIVE, our biweekly news programme exploring the stories shaping our world through breaking coverage, expert analysis, and hard-hitting interviews.
