RED DEER RUT 🦌 STAG Wallowing Wallow

Part 2/4 in the Series: During the summer months, both the Stags and Hinds will wallow in mud to keep cool and help keep biting insects off. However, throughout the Rutting season, any wallowing hole is fiercely protected by dominant Stags or a single Stag. This video story opens with one of the dominant Stags heading for his wallowing hole. Looking from where I was positioned on the opposite side of the valley, there was no sign of it until the Stag started scraping and flicking his 'scented mud' about. It is 'scented' by the Stag constantly urinating in it and scraping and mixing with the natural peat and mud of the fells. The Stag will then 'wallow' in it, rolling on one side and then the other. You can clearly see him thrash his Antlers in it and then wipe them down his upper back where he was unable to coat when rolling. This 'scented mud' makes him irresistible to his harem of Hinds and more intimidating to any challengers or rivals. Testosterone-charged stags spend many weeks bellowing at dawn and dusk in an attempt to intimidate and ward off rivals and also to bring hinds into heat/oestrus. This particular Stag seems to have got everything right and in the unrestricted version, he mates with one of his Hinds. As a parent and healthcare professional, I would much rather my child learned about nature from watching this sensitively made piece of footage, rather than them having to live in an isolated and sanitized world that becomes ever-detached from the natural environment. The health and wellbeing of our young people can be greatly improved by allowing them to experience the natural world, and if we prevent this by misguidedly labeling nature as ‘inappropriate’ then we deprive them of full health and wellbeing.
