I am not the greatest confectionary baker, but something I have always had success in is brownies and lemon squares/bars. These are brownies from the book Bravetart by Stella Parks. These are what I characterize as "grown-up brownies." They have an intense dark chocolate flavor with not as much sweetness as your typical brownie. For those cakey brownie lovers out there, stay away, these brownies are purely for the fudgey fans. I have made these before with the optional instant espresso powder and it took it over the top for me in terms of intenseness. So, this time I decided to exclude it.
