This brief video is meant to give you additional information about your new diagnosis of Brain arteriovenous malformation or AVM. AVMs are a complex tangle of abnormal blood vessels that can be found in any location within the brain. They are thought to be congenital and often only become apparent during adulthood. Brain AVMs may be found incidentally or they may come to clinical attention due to associated neurological symptoms. The most common symptoms resulting from an AVM are those due to bleeding in the brain, seizure, stroke, or compression of the surrounding normal brain structure. There are multiple treatment modalities for brain AVMs and a unique treatment plan will be formulated for you. In some cases, it may be determined that observation is the safest strategy. If your AVM needs to be treated you may be recommended to have: -Surgery which involves removal of the AVM -Embolization which involves occlusion of the vessels within the AVM -Gamma Knife radiosurgery which involved a high energy focused beam of radiation to obliterate the AVM These modalities can be used either alone or in combination. Your safety is our number one priority here at Lenox Hill Neurosurgery. The members of our comprehensive cerebrovascular center including microvascular neurosurgeons and neuroendovascular surgeons work together to create a unique plan that works for you.
