India has cleared a major round of defence acquisitions, marking one of the largest military modernization drives in recent years. The Defence Acquisition Council (DAC), chaired by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, has accorded Acceptance of Necessity for proposals worth ₹79,000 crore, covering the Army, Navy, and Air Force. For the Army, acquisitions include loitering munitions, low-level lightweight radars, upgraded Pinaka rockets, and drone detection systems to strengthen precision strike capabilities and protect vital assets. The Navy has received approval for Bollard Pull tugs, high-frequency software-defined radios, and leasing of high-altitude long-endurance drones to boost maritime surveillance and operational readiness. The Air Force will see upgrades including Automatic Take-off and Landing recording systems, Astra Mark-II BVR missiles, full-mission simulators for Tejas aircraft, and SPICE-1000 precision guidance kits to enhance aerospace safety, pilot training, and stand-off strike capability. The DAC has approved nearly ₹2.68 lakh crore in four major sessions this year, reflecting India’s commitment to modernizing its armed forces. Emergency procurement protocols, instituted post-Uri attack in 2016, have also been used for rapid acquisition of weapons systems, though delays are now being addressed to improve efficiency and delivery timelines.
