The nuclear–AI nexus: Implications for the three pillars of the NPT Review Conference

UNIDIR, in collaboration with the United Nations Office for Disarmament Affairs, is organizing a series of nuclear-related events in the lead-up to the 2026 Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) Review Conference. The conference is central to evaluating the implementation of the treaty and shaping its future direction. These events aim to enhance understanding of key issues and deepen engagement with the NPT review processes, procedures and potential outcomes. The third event of the series is organized as part of UNIDIR’s Science and Technology Watchtower project, funded by the European Union, which aims to identify science and technology developments and analyse the risks and opportunities for disarmament and international security. The advancement of several emerging technologies and their integration into nuclear weapons systems presents the NPT with both significant risks and potential opportunities. Particularly salient at present is the nuclear-AI nexus. This session served as a technology briefing and explored the potential implications of AI on the three pillars of the NPT, namely non-proliferation, disarmament and peaceful uses of nuclear energy.
