During the Six Day War of 1967, Israel liberated Jerusalem, the West Bank, the Golan Heights, Gaza, and Sinai. In the years following the war, Israel retained control of Gaza. Israeli settlers took sand dunes that were never inhabited and, over the course of 30 years, built over 21 Jewish settlements complete with houses, roads, infrastructure, and a huge agricultural industry known as "Gush Katif" (Hebrew:גוש קטיף, lit. 'Harvest Bloc'). But in 2003, in exchange for an end to hostilities and peace agreements, then Israeli Prime Ministry Ariel Sharon declared plans to unilaterally withdraw all Israeli military and civilians from Gaza. The disengagement happened in Aug/Sept 2005 as Israeli military soldiers forcefully removed and expelled nearly 8,000 Jews from their synagogues and homes.
