Xiamen has always been vulnerable to attack from the sea and various fortifications have been built over the centuries. The Ming built a fort to defend against Japanese pirates in 1387. The Hulishan Fortress / 胡里山炮台 was constructed in 1894 as part of a Westernization phase (1861–1895) during the Qing Dynasty. One of the primary goals in China during this time was to modernize the military. The 280 mm Krupp Cannon is well preserved. Its estimate range is up to 16 km (10 mi). It was recorded by the Guiness Book of Records as the world's oldest and largest coastal artillery of the 19th century in August 2000.
