In this dramatized therapy session you meet Clara, an 11-year-old girl receiving trauma-focused psychotherapy to treat symptoms associated with a history of sexual abuse by her mother’s then live-in boyfriend, Michael. In this video, Clara participates in her third treatment session and works with the therapist, Dr. Damion Grasso, PhD, to share and process her memory of the abuse. Clara’s growing discomfort is evident as she tells about the first time Michael abused her. As she begins to explain how the abuse progressed, Clara becomes overtly distressed and in a climactic moment, leaps onto and embraces the therapist. The therapist gently reestablishes physical boundaries while supporting Clara and facilitating diaphragmatic breathing. In processing Clara’s experience, we learn that what Clara needed most in that moment was support. The therapist explains that being able to recognize when she needs support and to ask for it will be instrumental to her ability to effectively cope with these feelings. The therapist emphasizes his determination to support Clara through this process. The scenario illustrates the complexity of the therapeutic relationship and the balance therapists must achieve for effectively supporting traumatized patients while also maintaining healthy boundaries. --- Welcome to the Center for the Treatment of Developmental Trauma Disorders (CTDTD) — a national center committed to transforming care for children and families impacted by trauma.
