In addition to recall, your dog should know how to do a U-Turn before you let them walk off-leash. U-Turn This one is so funny because my last dog, Oreo, and my current one, Mochi, both absolutely love this command and it was the easiest to teach! Again, you will need a normal short leash as well as a long leash. First, start with a normal short leash and start walking. Then, turn directions 180 degrees and say the word “U-Turn”. As your dog turns directions with you, mark and reward. Keep doing this by walking a few feet, U-turning, walking a few feet, U-turning, and so on. Once your dog kind of gets it, switch to a long leash. With the long leash, you simply do the same thing, and as they get better, give them some more distance to walk a bit in front of you before you give the command. When you U-Turn, if your dog doesn’t turn with you, simply tug very gently on the leash so that they turn with you, and continue to mark and reward each time. Then, with the long leash, you can also throw some treats on the ground a few feet away. Then, as soon as they eat it, say u-turn and then mark the behavior exactly when they turn around 180 degrees. This is great to capture the movement of turning completely around as the command. Keep doing this until they can do it without any leash at all. Eventually, you can phase out the treats. BUT, before going off-leash, your dog definitely needs a bulletproof recall, and for that, I’ll link the tutorial here on the screen.
