Limón & Tortuguero, Costa Rica | Rainforest Canals & Wildlife Wonders

Welcome to Reflective Explorer! Join me as I venture to Limón Province and the remote paradise of Tortuguero, on Costa Rica’s Caribbean coast. Getting to Tortuguero is an adventure in itself—I took a boat from La Pavona, accessible by road from both Limón and San José. The boat ride through the lush Tortuguero Canals took about one to two hours and was filled with unforgettable wildlife encounters: monkeys, caimans, toucans, and even the occasional sloth. Travelers can also reach Tortuguero by a longer, scenic boat trip from the Moín quay near Puerto Limón, which takes three and a half to four hours through jungle-lined canals. While most trips use motor launches, silent canoe tours in the park are a must for spotting wildlife up close. Boats from Moín typically depart once a day around 10:00 AM, and it’s best to reserve your spot in advance. Tortuguero village sits on a rainforest-covered sandbar within Tortuguero National Park, world-renowned for its green turtle nesting beaches. Although I visited outside turtle season, the experience was still magical. I visited the Sea Turtle Conservancy’s research station and learned about their important conservation work. The park’s canals, wetlands, and forests are home to jaguars, tapirs, manatees, and a dazzling array of birds and reptiles. Waking up early for the boat ride, gliding through misty canals, and being immersed in the rainforest made this a once-in-a-lifetime adventure.
