This is a sorting machine I made to be compact and yet do a good job of separating spent ammunition cases. Anything smaller than 9MM is first captured along with any debris. The remaining(3 trays) capture 9MM, then .40, then .45 . 9MM is all I care about so if the .40 bin has a .38's mixed in no problem as I will give them away anyway. First pass thru the machine sorts with roughly 90% accuracy do to the fact that 9's fit inside .40 and .40 fits inside .45 and a .22 can hitch a ride with all of the above. For a second pass I separate any so called riders and then the sorting accuracy is over 99% I usually bring home maybe 4 or 5 pounds at a time so two trips through the machine takes less than 10 minutes. I constructed it using the hard chromed shafts from a pair of 36"hydraulic cylinders they are 1.25 in diameter. The all rotating parts are at a 7 degree angle from horizontal. It is driven by a .25 hp 90 VDC motor but .1 hp would do the job. Speed is varied by a KBMG-212D KB control. The vibratory parts feeder was $100.00 from a used machinery dealer. The end plate are CNC'ed out of .75 plate and the bearing carriers that slide in them is CNCed out of .625 plate. The large horizontal tube at the rear ties the two end plate together is one of the hydraulic cylinder housings.
