From KPTV 12 in Portland, Oregon http://www.kptv.com/news/25783541/det... PORTLAND, Ore. -- When Portlanders want to buy a home that makes it easy for them to bike to the office, they call Kirsten Kaufman. She's a local realtor who specializes in finding people homes that provide easy access to bicycle boulevards, walking paths and public transportation. "As I rode my bike more and more, I started thinking that there would probably be people like me who would be interested in working with a realtor who knew how to get around the city on a bike," said Kaufman. Kaufman recently helped Joe Biel buy a house in Southeast Portland. He now lives about 30 blocks from where he works. "I think that's why, despite unemployment, people still want to be here. For that quality of life that revolves largely around walking and biking. So because of that, I think Kirsten has a giant market." Biel said. According to Kaufman, some homes are more bike-friendly than others, such as those that have a tuck-under garage. "The tuck-under garage connects to a basement area so people can work on their bikes and have a little shop down there," Kaufman noted. Since pedaling into the bicycle real estate market about two and a half years ago, Kaufman says business has boomed. The steady stream of customers has her hopeful more people will choose two wheels to get around town. "When you have a neighborhood where people are able to walk and bike, it's a more vibrant neighborhood, people know their neighbors, people feel safe and it's a livable community," said Kaufman.
