Serampore (14) was known as Frederiksnagore after King Frederik V of Denmark from 1755 and 1845 when it was under Danish sovereignty. Some sources claim that the Danes landed in Bengal considerably earlier, around 1698. They built out a colony in 1755, armed with a royal edict from Nawab of Bengal Alivardi Khan, who governed from Murshidabad, guaranteeing them unfettered trading privileges. After Serampore came under the Danish Crown in 1777, what began as a workshop with a mud fence and even a straw roof under the Danish East India Company eventually evolved into a well-planned town under Governor Colonel Ole Bie. Despite the fact that much of Denmark's past has been lost, increased interest in the country's history has aided in the restoration of some of the country's historic structures. Serampore seems to be a nice day-long or overnight retreat from Kolkata, with its combined legacy of Danish, British, as well as Bengali history and culture. The Goswami Rajbari (গোস্বামী রাজবাড়ী / শ্রীরামপুর ), erected by Raghuram Goswami in 1800, is one of them. When the Danes chose to transfer Serampore over to the British, it is believed that he offered to purchase the town, but the British rejected it. The Rajbari and other nearby homes are built in a hybrid of European and Indian styles. A large courtyard with fluted columns can be seen in the Rajbari's northern complex. Radha Madhav Jew is honoured by a temple. The yearly Durga Puja of the family is also held here.
