On April 15, over 7,000 judges, lawyers, students, and legal advocates came together for the largest online legal forum in U.S. history—Speak Up for Justice. The message was clear and sobering: our democracy is in danger if we do not protect judicial independence and the rule of law. Speakers from across the legal and political spectrum shared powerful, personal, and urgent reflections on what happens when the rule of law is undermined—and why silence is not an option. Here are some highlights from the notable speakers: -Dean Erwin Chemerinsky, UC Berkeley School of Law Chemerinsky warned of a systematic effort to erode public trust in the judiciary—and called on legal professionals to defend democratic norms before it's too late. -Judge Esther Salas, U.S. District Court Salas described today’s climate as a “bonfire” of attacks on judges—and urged the public to defend the judiciary as essential to democracy. -Ken Feinberg, Special Master, 9/11 Victim Compensation Fund Feinberg emphasized that democracy survives only when the rule of law is respected—even in moments of deep national crisis. -Justice Eileen Moore, California Court of Appeal Moore highlighted how access to justice for veterans reflects the moral core of a democratic legal system—and warned against repeating past neglect. -Judge Paul Grimm, U.S. District Court (Ret.) Grimm explained how the separation of powers and judicial independence are fundamental to American democracy—and must be protected at all costs. -Paul Kiesel, Forum Organizer and Attorney Kiesel drew historical parallels between modern-day attacks on the legal system and authoritarian regimes of the past—urging the legal community to act. #speakup #justice #judicialsystem #news #forum
