This is part 1 of a multi-part series this year in which I explain the process of building my off-grid cabin on a 5 acre plot of vacant land I recently purchased in a fairly remote area at 8,000 Ft. Elevation in the High Desert. Much of the material I used is recycled from the various jobsites I work on. Building Notes: -For the 6x6 posts I used extra treated cedar I got off a jobsite from work. I notched the bottom to fit in the concrete peers. -All rim joists and floor joists were 2x8" treated lumber. -The Deck boards were 1x6" treated lumber. -I used PL400 subfloor glue for ALL hangers (even though I only showed the deck hangers being glued), as well as ALL the tops of the floor joists where the plywood sheathing goes on. -Floor sheathing was 5/8" plywood that I recycled from an old job. The standard is usually 3/4" floor-specific sheathing. I will double this up with better quality 1/2" plywood for a temporary finish since it might be awhile before I had real flooring to the final product. -I used Simpson 2x8 hangers for the floor joists. I used 90-degree hangers to attach all the joists to the larger posts. -I used 3-1/2" - T-25 torques screws when not using standard 3" nails. I used larger 4-6" Timber-lock screws when attaching rim-joists to posts. I used 2-1/4" Ring shanked nails for the floor sheathing. 1-1/2" Tikko nails were used to attach hangers. -x6 4x4" treated posts were buried 3-4feet underground and packed with gravel to act as a more permanent post supports for the structure (to prevent it from sinking), and to act as a wind anchor (this particular property is very windy). 0:00 Intro Music 0:38 Why and How I started 3:03 Laying out the Foundation 8:40 Laying out the Floor Joists 13:50 Final Steps of foundation: Insulation and Sheathing 14:22 Closing Music Credit: "Thumb Up" by Roman Senyk #offgrid #cabin #build
