Food and Hope: The Power of Maize

What's a food staple in your country? In Nicaragua, it's maize. However, maize is extremely susceptible to adverse weather conditions. As climate change and natural disasters increase, WFP is helping to protect vulnerable families and their crops. Some work includes building communities' resilience through the creation and rehabilitation of assets — including community vegetable gardens, water harvesting and irrigation systems. WFP also diversifies livelihoods through new skills, and by giving training and support to strengthen agricultural production. WFP also buys maize, beans and rice from small producers which is provided to the school feeding programme, improving the nutritional value of the meals for children while providing a stable source of income for farmers. #ClimateAction #FoodStory #Nicaragua
