Gotta go fast! Or do you? Does drilling speed actually matter when placing implants? Of course! Faster drills mean not only more efficient implant placements (which are better for both you and your patients), but they also mean you aren't sitting there spinning a drill bit in your patient's socket. Once you get your drill fully seated in the guide and bottoming out, you're done! Many dentists who are accustomed to freehanding implants have some difficulty in speeding up their drilling once they start using guided systems. This can be for many reasons. First, when you don't use a guide, it's tough to get the drill started where you want it. Once you get a solid purchase point, you don't want to let it go, so you end up taking your time to ensure you stay on target. Secondly, when freehanding implants, you have no direct constraint on implant depth. You're guessing and hoping you don't hit vital structures. Not so with a guide. With fully guided systems, as long as you've properly planned your case, you can simply insert your drill and your guide will ensure you never contact any vital structures–depth is constrained! In this video, we'll talk about why many dentists drill for implants too slowly and steps you can take to speed up your drilling.
