Decided to do a booming guide for newer players. I have a friend that is trying to learn this game and I realized there is a lot to try an explain. in this video I walk through MY Portugal boom with how I do it. You or others may do it slightly differently, and that's okay! Hope this is helpful to newer players. May consider doing other guides if anyone finds helpful. Of Note, there are various ways to boom with Portugal, you can add more Town center cards (some of which can be sent twice) to get a greater score, however, you sacrifice unit combat. I personally don't think it's worth it, but it is an option. Segments: [00:00] Introduction & Portugal Overview -Explains the importance of mastering the "boom" skill. Portugal is chosen as a vanilla European civilization with a good economy, ideal for beginners. The goal is to maximize resource collection and age up quickly. [01:19] Age 1 Start & Market Setup -Initial actions: Collect crates and put villagers on hunts. Essential: Build a Market immediately, micro to gather 50 Wood/50 Coin, and research Hunting Dogs for faster food collection. [04:44] Age 1 Shipments Only send economic cards. Start with Economic Theory. Portugal's unique Fetorias card (passive resource gathering from TCs) is also available. Herd hunts closer to the TC to save villager travel time. [06:43] Age 2 Age-Up Strategy -Age up using the politician that grants 400 Wood Crates. Immediately research the wood upgrade. Start collecting Coin (1,000 needed for Age 3). Send the Fetorias card. [08:24] Age 3 Age-Up & TC Placement -Portugal gets a free Town Center (TC) with every age-up. Strategic Placement: Build new TCs on the edge of the map/near new resources (mines/hunts) to position villagers closer to future gathering spots. Micro to 1,200 Food/1,000 Coin. [12:51] Age 3 Shipments (Eco Boosts) -Once in Age 3, immediately send Refrigeration (all Food gather rate) followed by Royal Mint (all Coin gather rate). This sets up for the Industrial Age (Age 4). [15:15] Age 4 Age-Up & Factory Setup -Age up with the politician that grants 2,000 Chests of Coin. Send both Factory wagons as soon as possible and set them to collect coin/wood. Start collecting wood in preparation for the Imperial build-out. [19:02] Imperial Age Eco & Capital Build the Capital and research the 50% resource gather rate upgrades (Food, Wood, Coin) in priority order. Start sending the initial Mill card and wood market upgrades. [21:37] Building Mills & Eco Buildings -Build Mills (recommended 4242 split) and research all Mill upgrades. Tip: Build a Church (for XP/techs) and Tavern (passive gold trickle) if resources allow. [24:54] Portugal's Unique Church Tech -Send the unique Church card, then research the tech that boosts Mill gather rate (+20%) but slightly lowers others (-5%). Max out villagers (100). [26:37] Estates & Coin Saturation -Send the XP Chest shipment (2,000 XP). Build Estates (Plantations). Send all Estate cards (including the Team card) and apply all upgrades. Place remaining villagers on Coin (recommended 7 per Estate). [29:28] Military Buildings & Base Layout -Once the economy is maxed (4242 split), start building the Arsenal and all military production (Barracks, Stables, Artillery Foundry) in a tight formation for easy defense and walling. [31:19] Walling Strategy (Pillarless) -Lay out five layers of walls using the pillarless technique. Crucial: Do not upgrade walls to Bastion until they are fully built, as Bastion walls build slower. [33:57] Military Upgrades & Explorer -Send the Arsenal card and get all necessary techs (excluding Heated Shot). Start Imperial unit upgrades for all core units (Musketeer, Cassador, Hussar, Dragoons, Organ Gun). Upgrade the Explorer for high-HP tanking. [43:02] Final Preparations & Army Training -Upgrade all walls to Bastion. Start Fight Army: Train a mixed composition (Musketeers up front, Cassadors/Organ Guns behind, Hussar for flanking). Send in Minutemen as cannon fodder to absorb the first volley. [48:26] Post-Treaty Start Fight & Base -Have 8+ villagers ready at the front line to build new forward military production (Barracks in front, Stables on the sides, Artillery). Focus cavalry on flanking anti-cavalry and cannons. [52:33] Final Military Shipments & Conclusion -Send all remaining Military Cards (Gunpowder Infantry/Cavalry/Artillery HP/Attack and Train Time). Focus on tailoring the final army to the opponent's composition.
