Cleft Grafting An Apple Tree Limb To Another Apple Tree!

Cleft Grafting Test (a bit early, but the wood is dormant). So I wanted to test out a limb to see if I could get any results. My 3 year old Apple Tree grown from seed (a Gala Apple seed) actually fruited last year (small and sweet green apples). You can see it's journey from seed to tree here:    • Apple Trees from Seed   This tree has 2 Leaders and I have known this would become an issue for some time but didn't want to disturb it since it had set fruit last year. Now that it is winter and the trunk is showing signs of distress, I decided to take one of the vertical branches and attempt to cleft graft it to it's neighboring Crab Apple Tree (about 9 years old now). This is my first attempt and it is a few months earlier than prime time to do this method, but if it fails, I can try to air layer the other leader before the buds break.
