A proud day for the Otorohanga Kiwi House team 🦗🌿 Yesterday, we celebrated a major milestone in our conservation journey — the release of 193 Mahoenui giant wētā to Sanctuary Mountain Maungatautari. Every one of these wētā began its journey right here at the Otorohanga Kiwi House. Our dedicated team has been carefully breeding and raising them as part of a joint recovery programme between the Otorohanga Kiwi House and the Department of Conservation. From tiny hatchlings through to fully grown adults, our staff have provided the specialised care and expertise needed to give this nationally critical taonga species the best chance of survival. Seeing them head into a safe, predator-free sanctuary is the ultimate reward for years of hard work behind the scenes. It’s proof that conservation breeding works — and that our small team, working alongside partners, can make a big difference for the future of Aotearoa’s wildlife. We’re incredibly proud of our team, and of all the teams involved in this release. A huge thank you to all of our partners and everyone else who played a role in making this possible.
